Alexandria has adopted the state-wide building code, the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code [VUSBC] 2006 [based on the International Building Code IBC 2006 edition]. The IBC 2006 requires compliance with the ASME A17.1 2004 safety code for elevators and escalators.

State of Pennsylvania
The UCC Administration and Enforcement regulation adopted the following code for use throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, effective 12/31/2012. International Building Code 2009: however Chapter 30 (Elevators) is not adopted. Elevator requirements are found in Chapter 405 of the UCC. UCC item 405.2.requires compliance with ASME A17.1- 2000 with "A17.1a -2002 addenda.
